Moosewood Restaurant - Ithaca, New York

Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, New York is a vegetarian mecca. All vegetarian food all the time. Founded in 1973, the restaurant is run by a collective that not only creates fantastic food, but also fantastic cookbooks. I first heard about Moosewood six years ago when a friend showed me one of their cookbooks. I made a trip to Ithaca and was so impressed with the food that I bought myself a cookbook that has become a favorite. It is dog-eared and well loved, I use it frequently.

On our way through Ithaca I knew that we had to stop and visit Moosewood Restaurant for a dinner. The menu changes daily and there are usually four or five entrées to choose from. After a great bit of deliberation we chose the tofajitas - sautéed bell peppers, onions, zucchini, chayote and tofu wrapped in wheat tortillas, served on rice with drunken beans, guajillo pepper mole and guacamole. The recipe was taken from the Moosewood Restaurant New Classics cookbook. It was a fantastic meal, the guacamole was incredible and the beans were a great side. On our way out I picked up a new cookbook that I’m excited to try out some new recipes - Moosewood Restaurant Celebrates.

We had a Moosewood cookbook at the co-op. Some of the recipes in there definitely helped be ok with not eating meat.
