Another National Park already? Yep, we decided to stop in Wyoming at one of America’s most popular attractions - Yellowstone National Park. Lucky for us its not yet high season, so even on a Saturday the roads and parking lots weren’t too crazy. We took our time moving through the park, careful to slow down for any wildlife that appeared on the side of the road. Yellowstone is known for its geysers, and has a very high concentration of them. Above you can see a geyser that sits near the Fountain Paint Pot, where there is mud that bubbles and pops loudly.

Despite the fact that we had an afternoon thunderstorm to contend with, we still braved the weather to snap a few photos of Old Faithful releasing her water vapor and steam into the air. Its pretty incredible that park scientists can predict when the geyser will erupt. We saw many throughout the park that were bubbling and a few that erupted a few feet into the air, but nothing like Old Faithful. The eruption we saw lasted about five minutes. It’s not just one small plume of water that comes out, it’s a stream that keeps on coming and coming. Really interesting to sit and watch.

While inside and outside the park we constantly saw people standing in the rivers fly fishing. Neither Kate nor I had ever really seen fly fishing before, so this was a real treat. Fishing is one of the major recreation draws to Yellowstone National Park, and if I ever get a chance to come back to I will definitely try my hand at fly fishing.

We managed to see a buffalo up close and personal, right on the side of the road, probably about 50 yards from our car. You have to stay a decent distance away from them, as buffalo may look cute and innocent, but they’re not. They can weigh 2,000 pounds and sprint up to 30 miles per hour. Yikes. Those horns would do some major damage. I quietly snapped my photos and went on my way. Just south of Yellowstone is Grand Teton National Park, but that’s for another day…
It was great to see you at the Mennel camping trip! Wish I could have talked with you about your trip.:)
