I have always been a fan of clam chowder, as long as I can remember. When reading through the tourist information that we picked up at the Oregon border I was excited to hear that there are several places along Oregon’s coast where you can get award winning clam chowder made with fresh clams. I decided to not read too much more and just let my chowder experience unfold naturally.

While looking for lunch during our slow day in Newport, Oregon I decided to drive around until I found a place that fit the bill – small, rustic and not too touristy. We stopped at the Chowder Bowl for an early lunch, arriving at about 11:30am and beating the lunch crowd. I ordered a bowl of the house special – the clam chowder. A few minutes later I had the massive bowl pictured above sitting waiting for me. Wow. It was a lot of chowder. A lot. Very creamy. Good chowder, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. I ordered the shrimp on top, which was a really nice contrast with the creaminess of the chowder. A little bit of garlic bread with some water to round out a fantastic meal.

The Newport Chowder Bowl is located in historic Nye Beach, at 728 NW Beach Drive in Newport, Oregon. I know that if I’m ever back in Newport looking for some lunch I’m going to be stopping here again.
