Idaho and Montana

Idaho and Montana

Day 59 - 6/12 - The day started off with warmth. Not really warmth though, it was hot. The tent was in direct sunlight and it was heating up quickly inside. Checking the clock, it was already 6:55am, so we might as well get up we decided. We headed to the bath house for showers. That is where I spied the sign. You can see the photo of it below - warning of the dangers of dog poop. I laughed out loud and asked Brett to snap a shot of it before we left. He obliged - he’s too good to me.

We have seen many ‘Crossing’ signs along our trip. Cattle crossing, Duck crossing, Pedestrian crossing, Surfer crossing, Sheep crossing, Deer crossing, Elk crossing, etc. But in Idaho we had the first sign that read “Game Crossing”. We decided that instead of being understanding that Idaho did not want to limit which animals were allowed to cross the road right here that they meant games - like board games. So each time we saw a sign, we would each call out the name of a game that might cross here: Clue, Monopoly, Parcheesi, Uno, etc. It was random - but fun also.

In Idaho many of the highways have signs about needing chains to drive on the road. There are pull offs for you to put chains on and then after the mountain pass there is another area to remove them. That was definitely something that Brett and I were not used. From British Columbia through Montana (and beyond) we were surprised at the amount of major highways and other roads with cross bars and signs reading “Road Closed if Lights Flashing”. Thankfully none of the roads were closed as it would be a grand inconvenience to find an alternate route.

In Montana we drove through Missoula, over to Butte and then down to Dillon. Once we passed Dillon and headed towards West Yellowstone, we stopped for photos as it was gorgeous and we hit 9,000 miles of on our trip. We found a National Forest campground and decided to call it quits for the day. While driving on the 3 mile dirt road back to the site, we came across an animal that neither of us could identify. It looked like an antelope but Brett reassured me that it wasn’t. Mystery animal in Montana - how curious.
