Humboldt Redwoods to Elk Prairie

Humboldt Redwoods to Elk Prairie

Day 46 - 5/30 - We woke up to sunshine today. It is so much different being inland than along the coast. It is warmer and the chances for sunshine are so much higher. We packed up, showered and ate breakfast before heading back out to the Avenue of the Giants, the Scenic alternative to Hwy 101. We drove into Myers Flat and found ourselves faced with a decision. Do we play tourists two days in a row and drive through a second tree - or not? Well, we decided that if this tree was cooler than the first tree, we may have missed out on something great and opted to play tourists and drive through a second tree. This tree had a wider hollowed out area and it made exiting the car for the photos so much easier. There was also a tree house and several chainsaw bears.

The 20 mile drive along the remaining stretch of the Avenue of the Giants was gorgeous. We stopped often to get out and walk among them. They have a presence about them that is impossible to articulate. Stretches of the drive were foggy as there is just so much moisture in the air.

After a few hours of driving very little, we finally caught back up with 101 and started to make some northern progress. We made it all of the way to Eureka before we stopped for gas. And then made it to Orick, CA and the Elk Prairie Campground at the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. As you may have guessed it - there are elk here. Lots of elk - everywhere. We drove past a school house, there were elk in the front lawn. We drove past an abandoned warehouse and there were elk to the side of the building - just chilling in the shade.

After getting settled in and making some dinner, we loaded our yummy-smelling-items into the bear box and then crawled into the tent for another chapter in our seemingly endless book.
