Arizona Adventure

Arizona Adventure

After we wrapped up our Route 66 leg of the trip on Day 18 driving from Seligman sedona4 to Toprock, we decided to lay low for a few days and prepare for our second leg. We chose the lovely city of Lake Havasu City, Arizona as our resting destination. The city is on the AZ/CA border, just South of Needles, CA. With a very large recreation lake and free wi-fi, we were able to entertain ourselves for a few days. It was hot - 103 degrees and it felt just as hot in the shade. We remained cool through laying under the only palm tree we could find, utilizing the public library’s free wi-fi and catching a few movies (X-Men and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past).

We headed out from Lake Havasu City on Monday afternoon (Day 20), this time heading East back to Flagstaff. We spent day 21 in Sedona, Arizona hiking and enjoying the spectacular views of red rock country. It was a fabulous little city with tons of stuff to do outdoors. It was cooler here, only in the high 80’s, so we were ready to get out and go.

Having passed it up on our way West through Arizona on Route 66, we were particularly thrilled to spend Day 22 exploring the city of Flagstaff, Arizona. The weather was perfect in the low 70’s and the sun was flagstaff1shining bright. We explored the quirky downtown area and fell in the love with the city’s energy. There were bikes everywhere, which Brett loved, plus a really enjoyable active atmosphere. We returned to the Kaibab National Forest for a fourth night of free camping and were delighted to find 8-10 large elk roaming about. It was our third siting of elk in the area, and I have to say - they are flipping huge!elk

  1. [...] Highlight 2: Arizona By picking the state of Arizona, I selected Sedona’s red rock formations and outstanding beauty, Flagstaff’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere as well as the Grand Canyon’s natural beauty all in one. We absolutely loved Arizona - it has so much to offer. We weren’t there in the heat of the summer and yes, I have heard that it is a ‘dry’ heat; however, I still don’t know if it is something that I would enjoy. I was not as happy with the desert around Lake Havasu City as I was with the mountain air around Flagstaff; but the state was a delightful surprise and made it onto the ‘Places We Would Like to Live’ list.
