Sleeping in the car

Sleeping in the car

We have received numerous questions about how it’s going sleeping in the car thus far. So to answer all of you at once – here goes:

We love it! Sleeping in the car has been fantastic. Today is day #11 and we have spent $19 on campgrounds. We have stayed 4 nights in City/County/State Parks, 3 nights in National Lakeshore/Conservation/Wilderness Areas, and 3 nights with family/friends. We find public access sites, city parks without a posted closing time and signs forbidding overnight parking, and national public use areas. We rearrange the car, make the bed and crawl inside. We have awoken surrounded by forests, alongside rivers/lakes/waterfalls and the gently sound of Lake Michigan’s waves.

Our pillows lay on the folded down backseat with our heads up towards the backside of the front seats. bed
We face out the back window. When we opt to not put the curtains up, this allows for waking up to some amazing scenery. bed2
It is hard to tell that we even have the curtains up from outside the car!

With the curtains up, the sleeping area is very dark. It has been really easy and comfortable to sleep in the car – to both, Brett’s and my surprise. bed2
This is a close up of the curtains that mom and I made (thanks again mom). We used picture hanging hooks sewn onto the fabric with coax cable plastic securing pieces and viola! curtains_zoom
When we are sleeping in the back – our stuff has to go somewhere. These two pictures show where it goes. whereitallgoes
We leave the driver’s seat clear – just incase we need to move the car quickly. whereitallgoes2

@Sarah – Yeah, Kate and Jane did a great job with the curtains. If Marilyn wants a blanket maybe she could ask her Grandma?

@Mike – Thanks for the comment. We’re having a blast. Stay in touch for more pictures, we’re in Texas now!

I like the pictures – I never saw the finished products in place. I am glad that they are working the way Kate was sure they would.

Curtains are a brilliant idea! I’m also amazed that you can fit all of your stuff (minus sleeping gear) in the passenger seat. You are amazing packers.
