Packing the car

Packing the car

During the day, while we are driving, this is the setup for the car (see pictures):
frontseat

The front seat is kept clutter-free. We have maps, compass, water, music and sometimes the video camera. The picnic blanket lays on the floor of the passenger side up against the seat. There is chocolate candy in the driver door compartment and a trash bag in the passenger door compartment. Plus, there is a highlighter handy to mark our route.

The backseat looks cluttered in the picture. However it is anything but cluttered. The floorwell on the passenger side is the home to our two gallon water jugs, three nalgene water bottles, lantern, tent, camera tripod, umbrella, and front windshield sun shade.
backseat The floorwell on the driver side is home to our shower bags, books, maps for states other than the one we are in, AAA books (Thanks Aunt Susie and Uncle Steve) and other research, and the computer bag. On the hump in between the seats rests the kleenex box and the travel mug. On the backseat there are only four things: blue tote with camera gear, music and frisbee; bag with everything we take with us when we leave the car (water, camera, wallet, phone); two articles of clothing - sleeves or a jacket for both Brett and I; and behind the passenger seat on the backseat lies all of the food. We had decided when packing the car to leave Indy that we wanted the music and camera stuff accessible without having to pull over and open the back hatch. We also wanted to have quick access to our food and snacks. So, both of those totes made it into the backseat - the rest of the stuff is in the back.

We have four totes in the back: 1- Kate’s clothes, 2- Brett’s clothes, 3- Cooking gear, 4- Shoes; They ride right behind the backseat stacked two high. Our bedding lives in the very back as well. We have a full size foam pad, sheet, two mummy sleeping bags, two fleece blankets (someone steals the covers), and two pillows. During the day the blankets and sleeping bags are in tote bags to help keep them contained. Also in the very back, we put the nightly toiletry bag, the laundry bag and the curtains.

  1. What a great packer you are! I am so proud. You would think someone (our father) made us quite particular on making sure everything has a home and makes it there. Marilyn received two postcards yesterday! She was thrilled!!! Mwah
